Ways To Explore Writing With Kids from the blog of Mocking Bird

I'm not a Mum but i still wanted to share this with you because i think it's a wonderful way of keeping your children's minds active through the summer ... (not to mention my tiny little brain). It's from a wonderful photographic blog called Mocking Bird which i highly recommend checking out.

Ways To Explore Writing With Kids

WAYS TO EXPLORE WRITING WITH KIDS

by Amanda on July 20, 2010
Today I’m taking off the photographer hat and snuggling on my teacher hat. In my many years as a primary educator, my greatest love in the classroom came every morning when the kids and I would get out our writing books and create new worlds with our imaginations.
For me, writing is one of the greatest ways to get kids using their imaginations and creating. Every little kiddie is a natural born author waiting to have their ideas and stories explode onto the page.
It’s currently summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere and the mid year holidays are wrapping up down under. Unfortunately, kids will lose some of their learning over a big holiday break, so it’s really great if parents can continue with activities to keep those little minds ticking over.
Here are some ideas to get kids writing:
This is just a tiny sampling of ideas to get kids writing. As a parent, I wouldn’t be too concerned about their spelling and grammar. Definitely help them out if they ask you, but at pre and infants ages (2-7) it’s far more important to just let them write. Their teachers will have set ways in which they teach them about spelling and grammar. The teacher’s job is to teach them strategies to figure out spelling and grammar when stuck on unfamiliar words.
You can of course remind them of these four rules:
Every sentence must have; a capital letter to begin, full stop at the end, spaces between the words and it must make sense. Obviously Pre schoolers and even some Kindergarten children are not going to be familiar with sentence structure, so helping them to simply write familiar words is more than enough.
As I mentioned in the Ways to Inspire Kids to Love Books post, the best way to get kids excited about learning is through being excited yourself. Use yourself as a model and show them that you love to write. Call them “writers” and “authors” to make them feel proud of their accomplishments. A little praise and encouragement is the best gift you can ever give a child.
Photograph taken with a Holga using black and white Ilford film- this was a love note given to me by one of my Kindergarten students. She and her dad left it on my car one afternoon. It made my day.

workshop review ...

So the fabulous Boudoir Divas (i may have mentioned them before) asked me to write a review of their workshop to be submitted to "The Photography Parlour", a website where people can learn, & meet other photographers & well really it's all things photographic. & naturally i am super duper whoop whoop happy dance (maybe two dances on this one) to have my review posted!

i have also been blogged about over here ... & here ... yes it is a wonderful day in blog land for me!

Paper N Stitch ...

Paper n stitch ... a blog i was introduced to & wow did i fall in love. It helps that Brittni Wood the founder is such a wonderful fabulous lady. But her blog is amazing. Completely down to earth & full (some might chocka block full) of gorgeousness from fashion to photography to home decor ... she really does have a wonderful eye. I love that she keeps everything she does simple, there's no distracting from the items in front of us & as a big lover of pictures (though admittedly i love to read) when it comes to blogs the pictures are what draws me in. I love blogs, love hearing about other peoples lives & loves & wants & dreams but sometimes i don't want to wade through lots of words before i realize it's not i care about ... here we have big shiny colourful pictures to keep my simple brain happy.
& throw in the wonderful community Brittni has created for sellers of handmade items, when she asked me to join it wasn't a surprise that i jumped at the chance. This sight is small, but everything in here is gorgeous & so much variety. I admire the dedication people can put into their projects & this is one. Writing blogs & running websites are something i have major issues with on a daily basis (i really need to start writing my blogs in advance) but here is someone who does both with ease (well seemingly) & even manages to write some guests over on other sites. Oh & did i mention she has two etsy shops as well? talk about multi talented.
Well within the paper n stitch community there are a group of us playing a game of "tag". An idea put together but Tania Welch of Indo Bay Textiles, a group of us are tagging each other on a daily basis, writing blogs & show casing the work of individual sellers on paper n stitch. & so far i have discovered so many new pretty & shiny stores that i love. & tomorrow it is my turn to tag so all i can say is (& yes it's a cliche) watch this space ...!

ps. yes i changed my font ... i got bored, it happens ... maybe it's getting close to time for me to revamp the whole page!

you see ... i see ...

Ok ... so here's the thing ... the idea ... & the plan ... i am about to take part in a year long collaboration (yes i said year long ... because i need more things going on in my quiet life) with the wonderfully talented Tali Schiffer (& if you don't believe me about the talented part you should check out her website). Tali lives in Isreal & as we all know i live in not so sunny Germany, so a weekly get together is a little out the question (unless of course you're paying). So thanks to the wonderful world of the internet we have set up a blog for your viewing pleasure.

& you see i see is born ...

The incredible talented Tali (yes there i go mentioning her talent again) did all the hard work ... a name (i contributed the "one world" part) ... a header ... & a blog (i told you she was good) where you will be able to see our photos as the weeks go by. It's possible there may come a day where i even bestow on you some words of wisdom & Lauraism's!

Ok now for the specifics ... one photo every week for a year ... to be posted side by side on a Tuesday (why i hear you ask a Tuesday ... well i have no clue other than Tali chose Tuesday). Now to the fun audience participation part ... you guys ... yes you special special people get to pick the topics. In order to start this 52 week long photographic project we need 52 topic titles for us to work with. So throw on those thinking caps ... be creative ... & please try to avoid big words that my little brain doesn't comprehend.

art through the lens ...

I was lucky enough to be included within this website, amongst a group of fantastic photographers. Photographers come from all warps of life, we travel the world photographing anything & everything, viewing the world in a way no one else can. & that is what this article sets out to show. & whilst we are all different we all love photography, cameras & producing art through the lens.

Thank you Jes, & be sure to check out her shop on etsy ... Junquerevival.

another me blogging about you blogging about me ... i could so get used to this!

& now i get another chance to blog about my photo being included in someone elses blog, that of Cat Ludwig ... she took 2 of my favourite things as well, photography & animals & included photos taken by various members of the POE (Photographers of Etsy) team to include in her blog. She chose this photo of my munchkin head kittie as one of her images. Having another artist choose one of my images is something that never stops blowing my mind or making me feel special. Thank you chica. You can view the blog at http://catludwigstudio.blogspot.com/ & her stunning images in her Etsy store.

me blogging about you blogging about me

So i finally managed to enter the "photo of the week" "competition" a fellow POE member, Jessica Rogers has on her blog, which in itself was a miracle (possible i was trying to enter for the previous week & missed the deadline). Anyways i was delighted when my image was included with such other fantastic images on her blog.

The photo was one of those i shot as part of the shoot with Monique & James, in Landstuhl & is my favourite of the two. Taken in a setting that suits their personalities, urban, contemporary & fun it shows James looking at the camera smiling whilst Monqiue has her head thrown back laughing. I love how it is them, as individuals & them as a couple. Plus the angle is interesting.
