in the bleak midwinter ...

So we finally got our first real snow ... ok well technically our second but it's the first one where i didn't have to work. & it snowed for over 12 hours. So yesterday morning i got all excited about a possible snow day ... well my dream failed but i still managed to head up onto the hills before work with the camera to get some photos.

& oh was it cold out there (i've forgotten how it feels to be above freezing) ... last year i discovered a wonderful use for my ski pants, bought with the intention of skiing but well it hasn't happened yet. They're perfect for taking snow pictures ... keep me warm not to mention that i can get down in the snow no worries. The only downside is you know the lil dude kind of prevents them being done up but being as they come with "suspenders" it's all good!

Out on my "wander" i met a german guy out walking his dogs & we chatted for a little while. It turns out he goes up there every morning to get closer to nature. I can't lie when people say things like that i automatically roll my eyes but as we talked he mentioned the bench ... my bench ... & how he finds it so peaceful up there. Yes he interprets it differently to me but it was wonderful to meet someone else who finds this place i love just as peaceful as i do, & enjoys being out there with you know nature & stuff.

So here's my first snow blog for the year ... i imagine there will be a whole lot more to come ... & also i'd like to introduce you to my new favourite tree. Now i know i'm not alone in having a favourite tree but by the end of the winter you might be a little bored of it as i try & come up with all kinds of ways of photographing it because there is something totally bleak, lonely, isolated about this tree. I think it was love at first sight!

my weekend ... part deux (that's two in french if you didn't catch part one)

So it's time for part deux ... on Thursday as predicted! Oh & it also happens to be day two (we'll skip over the night part of day one) & so after a highly expensive hotel breakfast we headed over the bridge to "ye old town" of Salzburg. Which is all kinds of pretty. Lots of little cobbled streets & funny shops not to mention some amazing architecture. On the downside it has that whole tourist thing going on which destroys some of the illusion that you create in your mind when visiting a city such as Salzburg.
Don't get me wrong the city is stunning but as with everywhere full of crowds you never get to appreciate it quite the way you would should you be getting the opportunity to explore it yourself.
We visited the museum of modern art (it came highly recommended ... we found it over priced & a waste of time except for the gorgeous view from the top) ... the castle ... & wandered around the city. & yes as you can see there were photos & some wonderful architecture & detail you don't find in newer cities.
Lunch was had at a typical Austrian/German style tavern ...
& followed by more of that wandering i talked about before. oh & i should probably bring up the whole Mozart thing since he is Salzburg's most famous export ...
So that pretty much sums up our dead ... no one died ... i got to visit a new country & the alps were definitely something else, if nothing they are worth a couple of hours of your time.
& here's where i say "stay tuned" for part three ... that is the drive home! now i know you're all kinds of excited & trying so hard to contain your excitement!

my weekend ... part one

So this past weekend me & the hubby had the opportunity to escape from it all for a few days ... & of course the camera came along! We were heading down to Salzburg, a city in Austria about 5 hours south east of where we live, right on the border. Part one ... (that would be this part) is the journey down there & day one of our 3 day trip *trust me you will see a pattern emerge).

We left out home to grey & snow at some silly hour of Friday morning ... & didn't forget a thing. We were about 45 minutes late leaving but i hold the hubby responsible for that (nothing to do with my inability to get out of bed).

The journey down was uneventful ... we survived without permanent injury to each other & only one "photographic" break as i bugged the hubby until he would pull over & let me photograph the wonderful frost on the trees. It was gorgeous but sadly a German toilet stop is not the place to be wondering around with thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Plus it was all kinds of snow & i had no gloves. But the stop was worth it (well i think so).

From here we headed down to Konigsee, the highest lake in Germany & somewhere i have been wanting to visit ever since i saw some friends photos. Here we found a whole lot more cold, not a whole lot was open & the mist rising over the mountains ... but i persevered & managed to knock out a few more photos (acceptable i would say ... hehehe) & we made plans to head back in the spring/summer time when the weather is a little more compliant!

& from here it was on to Salzburg ... stay tuned for part deux (that's two for french in case you wondered) which i plan on writing tomorrow so lets assume it will appear Thursday!
