around the world with fPOE ... this week it's Riga, Latvia

I'm loving all the new places we're getting to visit right now ... since i began this series last year fpoe has grown in numbers dramatically with members spanning the globe & you're seeing it as once again we're outside of the united states. Europe has many many talented photographers, & recently we visited England, last week Germany & now we're off to Riga, Latvia. Are you excited? I'm excited!! So anyways let me introduce you to Rita Pētersone - Lazdiņa & monography.

Everything about Rita's work screams feminine to me ... soft, pretty, calm ... & we're not just talking pink here. I'm including her urban landscapes & those with tones typically considered masculine. It's easy to see why Rita fits right in with the group, producing wonderful fine art that i feel says so much about her. Here again we have a photographer who haves a great simplicity to her work ... full of details without being over the stop, we are left to imagine what happens next. I love this in photography, i love the beginning of a story, the question mark left hanging in the air of what happens next. I love that you can dream when you look at her photographs of people & places & memories. I know i know i say this a lot, it could just be the kind of person i am (my blog is called "ooh pretty shiny over there ... ") but any image that inspires me as a person is a great picture. It's what makes my world go round.

new shops ...

About a month ago i made the decision to open a second photography shop on etsy, "ooh pretty shiny". After various conversations & discussions with other photographer, etsians & bloggers i concluded one of the things standing in my way was a lack of cohesion in my shop. My style can be somewhat eclectic at times & from a buyer's point of view that's not necessarily a good thing. So whilst the timing couldn't possible be worst with so much else going on i opened the new shop & i love it. I love how both shops are starting to look & feel so different, everything seems to make sense. & so far all the feedback i have received has been incredible positive. I definitely made the right choice. 

The hard part i have found is the promotion aspect & i'm not spending as much time as i would like promoting both shops with my increasing work locally not to mention the lil dudes imminent arrival. & i know i am not alone in this world ... we all wish we could spend more time promoting & show casing our work, our shops & basically getting noticed out there in the big wide world. So here i am sharing new shops belonging to a couple of other fabulous female photographers on etsy, who's work i admire, who are wonderful women & who made the same choice i did. 

The Shabby Photographer (really the name says so much) is the brand new shop run by Natalie French, an incredible talented photographer also from the UK (which obvious adds to her appeal), who's work is simple stunning. No really, she has a wonderful eye & imagination for the small details & putting random objects together in a way that inspires well anybody with a couple of brain cells. Her style is vintage & whimsical, the tones through out her pictures are soft & calming & the final outcome is simple & unique. I wonder at the thoughts that go through her head that enable Natalie to capture the images she does. I would love to one day watch her work, to see the process of setting up the shot. For me i see things already around me, for Natalie the creation seems to be as much a part of the final product as the picture itself.

I wish i could remember how i became friends with Claudia but i can't ... maybe it was just a mutual love of photography. Anyways here we have another inspiration for me, & a girl i talk to on a regular basis about all things photographic. Not to mention we are both in the process of trying to expand our business & going through similar journeys. Well like me she has a second "style" to her photography & a growing love for lomo, film & vintage. So she set up a new shop "a lomo love affair" (don't you just love the name) to showcase this & other similar techniques away from her original shop "a place for twiggs". & i love how it looks, still very much her style but with a totally different feel. Claudia sees things in the world around her, from nature to the random to a bright green bug & captures them in a way that showcases their own specific beauty. How can you not love this girl or her work? & if you have a moment i suggest heading over to her fabulous blog, yes this girl is not just an incredible talented photographer but a fabulous writer!

monday morning ...

So there seems to be a theme in the treasuries i'm posting right now ... see the weather here moves between "sucky" & "suckier" (those are more weather dude technical terms) so here i am sharing something that makes me smile, think of spring & prey this horribleness will leave us eventually. Anyways not that i'm biased but this here treasury is full of stunning photography & gorgeous tones. around the world with fPOE ... this week it's Pueblo, Colorado

So after a week's break (things are a little hectic round here you must excuse my missing an occasional week) we are back for a new journey! 2011 has seen us checking out the work of Shannon Blue Photography, in Boulder, Colorado & then heading south to San Antonio, Texas to view the hollywood feel of K. Clark Photography. Well this week we're heading back up north, to Colorado (again), more specifically Pueblo & the gorgeous imagery of Frankie Kins & Bluemoon Studio.  

As i looked through Frankie's shop i felt like i had stepped back in time, a long way back in time to the Victorian era. The tones of Bluemoon Studio are very subtle, & warm reminding me of sepia & "ye olden days". There's a stillness in her work, peace & quiet & calm, & this can be seen through her variety of subjects. There's no one thing that stands out, & many of her images remind me of stories i've heard or read, a Charles Dickens Novel or a fairy tale. She brings life to those small moments. & whilst i find Frankie's imagery calming i also notice a haunting quality in it, reminiscent of a ghost story. Not in the evil sense but an unknown presence or energy, something you can feel but don't necessarily see until the shutter clicks.

To really get an understanding of what Frankie Kin is about you have to view all of her work ... she doesn't fit into a box instead she pushes the boundaries & asks questions of the viewer ...

Every where the weather seems all out of wack this winter ... from 17 degrees through to 55 (here in germany) you go to sleep in a winter wonderland & wake up to floods! Anyways my world of germany is currently full of ickyness (that by the way is a technical weather dude term) so when i saw this fpoe treasury created by the fabulous Natalie French i decided it needed to be shared.
